The life path number is built from the birth date alone. The name plays no part in it and neither does the hour of birth, which is why this figure can be calculated for anyone whose date is known. The arithmetic is addition plus one rule about when to stop.
Take any number and add its digits. If the result has more than one digit, add those digits too, and continue until a single digit is left. 1990 becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. The exception is the set 11, 22 and 33, called master numbers in this tradition. When a total lands on one of them, the reduction stops. 29 becomes 2 + 9 = 11 and stays 11 rather than continuing to 2.
Route one reduces each part of the date separately, then adds the three results. Route two writes the whole date as a string of digits and adds them in one pass. Published authors use both, and they usually agree.
| Route | 14 May 1990 | 19 August 2000 |
|---|---|---|
| Parts separately | 5 + 5 + 1 = 11 | 1 + 8 + 2 = 11 |
| Single pass | 1+4+5+1+9+9+0 = 29, then 11 | 1+9+8+2+0+0+0 = 20, then 2 |
For 14 May 1990 the day reduces to 5, the month is already 5, and the year 1990 reduces to 1. Those three add to 11, and 11 is kept. The single pass gives 29, which reduces to 11 as well. Both routes land on 11.
19 August 2000 behaves differently. The day 19 reduces to 10 and then to 1, the month stays 8, and the year 2000 reduces to 2. Added together they give 11, kept as a master number. The single pass gives 20, and 20 reduces to 2. One route says 11, the other says 2.
The disagreement is not an error in either method. Adding digits preserves the remainder when a number is divided by 9, so both routes end in the same family of results. The split appears only where one route meets 11, 22 or 33 and stops while the other passes through a total that is not a master number. This is usually the reason two readers give you different life path numbers: not a mistake, a different stopping rule. Some schools also keep a master number inside a component, before the final addition, which opens a third variant.
Three figures do most of the work, and each answers a different kind of question.
The longest arc, derived from the date. It is read as the shape of a life rather than a fixed fate: the kind of work that holds attention, the way decisions get made, the friction that repeats.
The day of the month, read on its own. Some schools reduce it, so 19 becomes 1, and some keep the compound as 19/1. The difference matters in the reading: the reduced figure describes a capacity, the compound describes how that capacity arrives. Its range is narrower than the life path, and its tone is more specific.
Letters are converted to digits and added, with vowels and consonants sometimes counted separately. The table is where the schools part company. The Pythagorean table runs A to I as 1 to 9, J to R as 1 to 9, and S to Z as 1 to 9. The Chaldean table assigns values only up to 8, gives no letter the value 9, and distributes letters differently: A is 1 in both, while P is 8 in Chaldean and 7 in Pythagorean. Schools also disagree on whether Y counts as a vowel, on how accents and Γ± are transliterated, and on whether to count the name at birth or the name in use. Two careful readers can produce different name numbers for the same person without either being careless, so a reading should state which table and which spelling it used. The glossary defines the terms, and the guide to life path numbers takes the meanings one at a time.

Most often because it used the other route, or reduced a master number that this reading keeps. The letter table shifts the result as well. Ask which method was used before assuming one is wrong.
No. The life path and birth day numbers come from the date alone, and the name number comes from the spelling. The hour matters only for calculations this reading does not use.
The reading states which spelling it used. The name at birth and the name in use produce different numbers, and neither is more correct in the abstract. If you want a particular spelling counted, say so with your data.
No. 11, 22 and 33 are read as more volatile versions of 2, 4 and 6, with the same themes under more pressure. Nothing in the system ranks one number above another, and a life path of 4 is not a lesser result than 22.
